Memoir

Dior by Dior

Christian Dior

Dior's own account of the New Look years, written near the end of a career that lasted ten seasons and changed everything.

Why read it

He is plain about the parts a designer is usually coy about: the money, the fear before a show, the superstitions, the way a house runs. The description of building a collection from the first sketch to the fitting room is the closest thing there is to seeing inside a couture house at its height.

Why own it

It is a primary source, not a book about Dior, and it reads in an evening. Anybody working in fashion should have read the founder in his own words at least once.

Who it is for

Fashion students, and anyone curious about how a house actually operates.
