The Elements of Typographic Style

Robert Bringhurst

Typography argued as a literary discipline, by a poet who sets his own books.

Why read it

Bringhurst treats the page as a score for a voice, and everything follows from that: an indent is a breath, a measure is a phrase, and every convention arrives with a reason underneath it rather than a rule. It is the one typography book that improves your reading as well as your setting.

Why own it

It is written to be consulted one decision at a time (the tables of proportion, the historical classifications, the chapter on combining faces), and it is set well enough to serve as its own demonstration. Most working typographers have been annotating the same copy for twenty years.

Who it is for

Designers past the basics who want the reasons, and anyone typesetting a book.
