The Shape of Design

Frank Chimero

A short book on craft and storytelling in design, funded by its readers and given away online.

Why read it

Chimero's subject is why we make things at all, and his answer, that design is the arrangement of parts into a story somebody can follow, is argued through improvisation, cooking and jazz rather than case studies. It is what to read when the work is technically fine and dead.

Why own it

It was crowdfunded and released free, and the printed object is deliberately good: the point of owning it is that it is a designed argument about design. Short, re-readable, and it travels well.

Who it is for

Designers in a slump, and anyone who teaches.
