Rem Koolhaas & Bruce Mau
Thirteen hundred pages of essays, diaries, manifestos and projects, ordered by size and designed by Bruce Mau.
Why read it
Two arguments run at once: Koolhaas on the modern city (Bigness, the Generic City, the essay on shopping), and Mau on what a book becomes when its design is a co-author rather than a container. Reading it is the point; it was never built to be indexed.
Why own it
There is no version of this that is not the object. The weight, the bleeding type, the dictionary running along the bottom of an essay that interrupts it, none of it survives a screen, and all of it is deliberate. It is the book most often named as the reason somebody became a designer.
Who it is for
Anyone who thinks a book has a fixed shape.
