The identity
Cartier's mark is a box. Jewellery in its red box was on a Broadway stage in 1926, in Anita Loos's play Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, which tells you how early the colour was doing the selling.5 Louis Ferla says he has never seen anybody receive a red box and be upset, and that he has watched the same reaction in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Dubai.1 The face changes before the box is even opened.1
What holds the house together is one person's veto. Pierre Rainero has guarded the house's image and style since 2003, and the job is to decide whether something Cartier wants to do is truly Cartier, marketing and strategy included.13 His final test leaves the archive out of it. He forgets what he knows about Cartier, steps back and asks whether the object is beautiful.3
The red box
A red case that was already carrying the house onto a Broadway stage in 1926.5 Ferla's proof that it works is a face rather than a figure, and he says he has never seen anyone open one unhappily.1
The Tank
A watch whose vertical brancards stand for a tank's treads, and whose square case broke with the round shape watches had always had.9 Cartier reintroduced the Tank Must in 2021.9
Tutti Frutti
Carved gemstones in the Mughal manner, called simply pierres de couleur when they arrived in the 1920s and only nicknamed Tutti Frutti in the 1970s.7 Jacqueline Karachi describes the onyx in them as a way to shadow the design and give it strength.7
The panther
A panther pattern first put on a wristwatch in black onyx and white diamonds in 1914, then sculpted in three dimensions in 1948.8 Jeanne Toussaint, who ran the jewellery side, was nicknamed La Panthère, and Barbara Hutton ordered a yellow diamond and onyx brooch with matching ear clips.8
Screws you can see
The Love bracelet's two rigid arcs were dubbed a precious handcuff, because two people are needed to secure the screws.10 The Trinity ring works the same way, three intertwined bands in three colours of gold, given a square version in 2024 at 101 years old.10

How it positions itself
Cartier sells jewellery first and watches second. Jewellery came to 63 per cent of its sales, with high jewellery contributing 10 per cent of the total.10 The prices run a long way. A small Love bracelet cost $7,150 when the Straits Times checked in 2025, while pieces in the high jewellery collection typically run $50,000 to $10 million.1012
The group's numbers carry it. Richemont's jewellery maisons, Cartier among them, took €16.5 billion in the year to 31 March 2026, up 14 per cent at constant exchange rates.11 Johann Rupert credited a long-term approach centred on differentiation, strong brand identity and disciplined pricing.11 Ferla says the same thing more plainly, that when something is working you continue, and you do not change a winning formula.1
It talks about continuity rather than newness. Rainero says a growing number of clients in their 20s and 30s are asking for designs from the 1970s to the 1990s, which is why the house keeps reworking what it already owns instead of starting again.1 The square Trinity ring of 2024 gave a new shape to a design already 101 years old.10 Marie-Laure Cérède was creative director of jewellery and watchmaking between 2016 and 2025, and after leaving at the end of 2025 she joins Chanel in October 2026.4
Three things to take from it
- 01
Design the shape, then build the engine
The last room of Cartier's 2026 booth staked a claim few watchmakers can, that the house draws the watch first and then engineers a movement to fit inside it.1 The Tank did exactly that in 1917, and Cartier was still selling the Tank Must in 2021.9 Decide what your product should look and feel like, then go and find the parts that fit. Do not let your supplier's standard component decide your silhouette.
- 02
Put the box in the budget
Ferla's evidence for the red box is a face rather than a figure. He says he has never seen anybody receive one and be upset, in Hong Kong or Shanghai or Dubai, and the box was already doing that work on a Broadway stage in 1926.15 Spend on the thing your customer touches first. A wrap that makes someone pause before they open it is cheaper than the advert that sold them.
- 03
Go to where your material comes from
Jacques Cartier made the trip to India in 1911 and came back with both a client list and carved stones the house had never set before.7 A century on, Jacqueline Karachi still makes yearly trips to Jaipur to source her stones and to Mumbai for rose-cut diamonds.7 Buy at the source yourself, at least once. The relationships and the odd material you pick up there end up in the work, and a competitor cannot copy them off your website.
