Building a visual argument

Lesson 3 of 12 in Art direction.

Lesson

Work that persuades is built like an argument. There is a claim, there is evidence, and there is a shape that carries you from one to the other. Work that does not persuade is usually a collection of attractive assets with no claim underneath them.

An ink drawing of a long table with a single claim card at its head, where hands push six of nine photographs into a box and leave three behind.
Testing each photograph against one written claim and dropping those that add nothing.
