Briefing a creator

Lesson 9 of 11 in Storytelling and short video.

Checked against the makers' documentation on 9 October 2026.

Lesson

A creator brief hands your story to somebody else's voice. Creators are worth paying because their audience trusts the way they talk, so a brief that dictates every word throws away what you bought. A brief that says nothing gets you a film about the creator. The useful brief fixes the few things that must be true and leaves the rest open. Google's Shorts guidance puts the open half plainly, advising brands to give real people a real stage and to free their talent to create their own endorsement.

  1. Question 1, locked

A creator is sent a face oil they never asked for and later mentions it in a reel. Under ASCI's guidance, is a disclosure needed?

    • No, because no money changed hands
    • Only if the brand asked for a mention
    • Yes, because ASCI counts free products, including unsolicited ones, as a material connection
    • Only if the reel runs longer than fifteen seconds
  2. Question 2, locked

A paid reel of 15 seconds has no accompanying text. How long must ASCI's disclosure label stay on screen?

    • For the whole film
    • At least three seconds
    • A third of the film's length
    • Only in the first frame
  3. Question 3, locked

What do ASCI's guidelines say about a platform's own disclosure tool, such as Instagram's Paid Partnership tag?

    • It replaces any label in the caption
    • It may only be used on videos shorter than two minutes
    • It is needed only when the creator is paid in cash
    • Using it should be considered in addition to the creator's own disclosure
