Lesson

A reel script fits on a phone screen and still takes longer to write than most people expect. Every word has to be said by a person in about the time it takes to pour a glass of water. Start with the premise, one sentence that names the character, the want and the change. Then write the ending. A script written from the first line forward tends to wander, while one written backwards from its payoff contains only what leads there.

Members answer these 3 questions and keep the ticket for this lesson. Every lesson has one.

  1. Question 1, locked

After writing the premise, which part of a reel script does the lesson tell you to write next?

    • The opening line
    • The ending
    • The hashtags for the post
    • The disclosure label
  2. Question 2, locked

A read-through runs two seconds over. What does the lesson tell you to do?

    • Ask the speaker to talk a little faster
    • Speed the voice up in the edit
    • Drop the end card to make room
    • Cut words until it fits with a second to spare
  3. Question 3, locked

Creators say scripts kill the natural feel, and producers say unscripted shoots yield no story. What is the lesson's middle path?

    • Script the shape and the facts, leave the exact wording to the speaker, and record several takes
    • Write every word and have the speaker learn it by heart
    • Shoot without a plan and find the story in the edit
    • Use only words on screen so nobody has to speak
