Captions and words on screen

Lesson 8 of 11 in Storytelling and short video.

Checked against the makers' documentation on 9 October 2026.

Lesson

Three sets of words appear on a reel, and they get confused. Captions are the speech written out. W3C, which writes the web's accessibility standards, describes them as a text version of the speech and non-speech audio information needed to understand the content, synchronised with the audio. Supers are the words the edit adds, such as a price, a line of the story or a disclosure label. The post caption is the text beneath the reel in the app. ASCI's influencer guidelines say a disclosure is likely to be missed anywhere a person has to click MORE to see it, which is a fair warning about how little of a post caption gets read.

  1. Question 1, locked

What is the difference between open and closed captions?

    • Closed captions are part of the picture, and open captions can be turned off
    • Open captions are part of the picture and always show, while closed captions can be shown or hidden
    • Open captions are written automatically, while closed captions are typed by hand
    • They are two names for the same thing in different countries
  2. Question 2, locked

W3C's example of a bad automatic caption shows which kind of error?

    • A caption appearing a second late
    • A caption set in the wrong typeface
    • A brand name written in capitals
    • A missed 'not' that turns an instruction into its opposite
  3. Question 3, locked

A No. 4 reel is spoken in Malayalam. What does the lesson say about its captions?

    • Caption it in Malayalam, and make an English version as a separate export if needed
    • Caption it in English only, since more people read English
    • Leave it uncaptioned, since the voice carries it
    • Put Malayalam and English in every line
