Props, and the difference between dressing and clutter

Lesson 7 of 11 in Set design.

Lesson

The difference is whether a prop is answering a question. A half-drunk cup says somebody was here a moment ago and will come back. A second cup with nothing in it says the stylist had two cups. Both cost the same. Only one is working.

An ink drawing of a table with a half-drunk coffee and a face-down book beside a pushed-back chair, while a stylist's hand removes a second clean cup.
A half-drunk cup tells a story while the spare clean cup is removed.
