The hook, and the first two seconds

Lesson

The hook is whatever, in the first second or two, gives a viewer a reason not to swipe. It can be a picture, a sound or a spoken line. It works by making a promise that the rest of the film keeps, usually by showing a problem the viewer recognises or an object doing something they want explained. A hook that promises what the film never delivers wins two seconds and loses the viewer's trust, which is the more expensive of the two.

  1. Question 1, locked

How does a hook work, according to the lesson?

    • By being louder than the reel before it
    • By showing the logo in the very first frame
    • By making a promise that the rest of the film keeps
    • By asking the viewer a question in large text
  2. Question 2, locked

What does Meta's Reels ads page say about sound?

    • Reels play muted until the viewer taps
    • Reels default to sound-on
    • Sound plays no part in how Reels ads perform
    • Only licensed music may be used in Reels ads
  3. Question 3, locked

Some brand directors fear early branding makes people swipe, while Google says to brand early. What does the lesson suggest?

    • Make the brand part of the hook, as with an amber bottle in the first frame
    • Keep the brand back for the end card
    • Put a small logo in a corner for the whole film
    • Leave the brand out of the video and rely on the post caption
