Screen Printing vs. Embroidery: Which is Best for Your Custom Apparel? · Real Thread
Lesson

Clothing is worn by people who did not choose it, in front of customers, for whole shifts. That is a different design problem from a poster, and comfort and dignity matter more than the logo being large.

An ink drawing of a workbench with a detailed bird drawing, a blurry stitched test of it, and an embroidery machine stitching a simpler bold bird onto a navy polo shirt.
An embroidery test on a staff shirt: the fine lines of the detailed mark blur into a knot of thread, while a simplified bold version stitches cleanly.

  1. Question 1, locked

A mark with hairline strokes is going onto embroidered shirts made by twelve different suppliers. What belongs in the guidelines?

    • A version drawn for stitch with the fine detail removed, plus the smallest size it may be used at
    • The Pantone TCX reference, with an instruction to match the printed colour exactly
    • The full-detail vector at high resolution, so each supplier can simplify it as their machine requires
    • A note banning embroidery altogether, so everything is screen printed instead
  2. Question 2, locked

Which of these words means this? “Stitched. Minimum detail is set by stitch size, not by the artwork.”

    • Embroidery
    • Theme file
    • Six-sheet
    • Transactional email
  3. Question 3, locked

Which of these words means this? “Cheaper at volume, sits on the surface, cracks over time.”

    • Template
    • Screen print on fabric
    • Decision point
    • Progressive disclosure
