Lesson 3 of 18 in The brand book.

Lesson

"Write it for someone in a hurry" describes the readers a brand book really has. This lesson is about finding out who they are for one particular brand, because the list changes from company to company. At one it is a procurement manager choosing a supplier, at another a distributor in another market making a local flyer, or an intern making a slide deck an hour before a board meeting.

The order a brand book is read in, and where most readers stop.
A hurried intern at a desk beside an open, flipped-through manual looks at a laptop showing a dark city photo with a small round emblem stuck on in a clumsy white box.
In a hurry and unable to find the rule for a dark photo, an intern pastes the emblem in a white box. Off-brand work usually starts with a guess like this.

  1. Question 1, locked

A brand book says nothing about placing the logo on a dark photograph. What does that silence produce?

    • Nothing much, because designers default to the reversed mark when in doubt.
    • Somebody puts a white box behind it and ships it.
    • The question comes back as an email, so the gap stays visible and harmless.
    • Most people leave the logo off rather than break a rule they cannot find.
  2. Question 2, locked

Which of these words means this? “Anyone applying the brand who was not involved in designing it. Numerically, almost everybody.”

    • Format
    • Governance
    • Downstream user
    • Grid page
  3. Question 3, locked

Which of these words means this? “The email that arrives because somebody could not find a file. A good measure of how well the book works.”

    • Asset request
    • Scale table
    • Brand book
    • Specimen
