Domain and handle availability

Lesson 7 of 10 in Naming.

How To Choose A Perfect Domain Name · Vlad Kachur
Lesson

Availability is a real constraint and it is not the first constraint. Plenty of successful companies run on a domain with a word added, and a name that is legally clear and memorable with an imperfect domain beats a poor name with a perfect one.

Hundreds of names narrowing through screening to the two that survive.
Five different shop doors stand along a street, four marked with the same crescent emblem and one padlocked with a triangle emblem, where a customer has stopped, confused.
A customer walks past a row of doors looking for the same emblem, and one door belongs to someone else. Check every platform together at shortlist stage, before the name is settled.
