Colour pages and how to specify

Lesson 9 of 18 in The brand book.

How to Apply a Color Palette to Your Design – Tutorial · The Futur Academy
Lesson

A colour page has two jobs and most do only the first. It has to give every value a supplier could need, and it has to say how much of each colour to use.

One colour specified four ways, because four processes need four numbers.
The top row shows three posters using the same four colours in very different amounts, and the bottom row shows three matching posters following a strip of mostly cream, some navy, a sliver of orange and a hairline of lilac.
Three posters made from the same four colours look unrelated until they follow one strip showing how much of each to use. The amounts matter as much as the colours.

  1. Question 1, locked

You tell the printer the colour must match exactly. What have you actually given them?

    • A clear standard, which is the strongest position to hold a supplier to.
    • The same thing as a Delta E figure, said in plainer words.
    • A reason to charge more, but a reliably accurate run.
    • Nothing to aim at, and yourself no grounds to reject the run.
  2. Question 2, locked

Which of these words means this? “Every value a colour needs: spot, process, screen, textile, paint.”

    • Drift
    • Specification set
    • Lockup
  3. Question 3, locked

Which of these words means this? “A strip showing the palette at true proportions. Checkable at a glance.”
