Back of pack and mandatory information

Lesson 5 of 20 in Packaging.

Food Labelling Regulations in India according to FSSAI · Kasho's Food Insider
Lesson

The back of pack is the most regulated surface in brand design, and it is the one most often handed to a junior on the last afternoon of a project. It typically has to carry the contents and the quantity, the responsible business with a real address, a durability date or batch code, storage and use instructions, and for food, allergens plus a nutrition declaration.

The back of a pack, where legally required information takes the space first.
The top row shows a designer's back panel overflowing with grey text blocks and the sheet crumpled, and the bottom row shows the back fitted neatly first and the leaf-patterned front added afterwards.
Designing the pretty front first ends with the legal details spilling off the back and the sheet crumpled. Fitting the back first leaves the front room to breathe.
