Layout and grid pages

Lesson 11 of 18 in The brand book.

Lesson

A grid page that shows an empty structure of columns teaches nothing, because the difficulty of layout lies in knowing which elements go where, how much space separates them, and what to do when something is too long. The columns are the easy part.

The order a brand book is read in, and where most readers stop.
Three pages share a six-column grid: the first is empty, the second holds a calm layout of photo, headline and text, and the third holds a crowded layout still aligned to the columns.
The same six-column grid sits empty, then carries a calm layout, then a crowded one that still lines up. The worked examples teach layout; the empty grid does not.
