The canon, and writing it down

Lesson 2 of 11 in Brand world building.

Lesson

A world needs a written record of what is true, for the same reason a long-running television series does. Without one, the fourth agency to touch it invents a detail that contradicts something from two years ago, and the world starts to feel arbitrary.

Four drawings of a fox mascot sit in a row, the first three matching and the fourth with circled mistakes, beside an open book of fox sketches with a crossed-out top hat.
An invented fox mascot is drawn by four teams and the fourth gets it wrong, while an open book records the true fox and what it never wears. A written canon keeps a world consistent.
