Iconography systems

Lesson 13 of 18 in Identity systems.

Iconography for Designers | Top 3 Tips · Jesse Showalter
Lesson

An icon set is a typeface made of pictures, and it succeeds or fails on the same thing: consistency of the parts rather than brilliance of any one drawing. A user does not admire an icon. They find it, or they do not.

A doodle on graph paper of eight matching line icons, a house, envelope, bell, magnifier, heart, gear, cup and star, with a thicker, sharp-cornered padlock icon circled in red beside them.
Eight icons drawn on one grid with the same line weight and rounded corners, beside a misfit drawn thicker and sharper that stands out at once.
