Stop Kerning Wrong: The Professional Way to Space Type 👀 · Will Paterson
Lesson

For a new brand, the first logo should usually be a wordmark. That means the name set in type with nothing else, so it says the name every single time it appears, which a symbol cannot do for a brand nobody knows yet. It is also the cheapest mark to make well and the simplest to search, because you are searching a word. The Graphic design course's lesson on logotypes and wordmarks covers the craft in depth. This is the evening version.

  1. Question 1, locked

According to Google's FAQ, as the lesson reports it, can a font from Google Fonts be used in a logo?

    • Only with written permission from Google
    • Yes, the FAQ says the fonts may be used within any logo
    • Only if the letters are left unmodified
    • Only for brands that are not selling anything
  2. Question 2, locked

Why convert the finished wordmark to outlines?

    • So it looks the same on a computer that lacks the font
    • So it counts as a registered trademark
    • So the file is smaller for Instagram
    • So the letters can be retyped more easily later
  3. Question 3, locked

Three rival brands in your category already set their names in your chosen typeface. What does the lesson suggest?

    • Keep it, because the category expects that look
    • Add a symbol beside the name to tell yours apart
    • Change the face, the weight or the case
    • Set everything in capitals and leave the rest alone
