Working with a printer

Lesson 8 of 20 in Packaging.

PrePress Workflow for Package Printing · The Packaging School
Lesson

A printer is a supplier and also the most useful technical consultant on a packaging project, and the difference between those two relationships is when you call them. Involved at the start, they will tell you what the substrate can hold, which finishes can share a pass and where the tolerances are. Involved at the end, they can only tell you what is wrong.

On the left a printer points out a fine line on a carton sketch while the designer thickens it, and on the right the pair stand by a press and a stack of spoiled sheets as the printer spreads his hands.
Asked at the sketch stage, the printer spots a line too fine to print and it is fixed with a pencil. Asked at the press, the same fault means a stack of spoiled sheets.
