Checking a name yourself

Lesson 4 of 11 in Brand for founders.

Checked against the makers' documentation on 9 October 2026.

Lesson

You can do the first screening of a name yourself, for nothing, in about an hour. It will not replace a trademark agent's opinion when the results are close, but it rules out many bad names before you have spent a rupee on them. This is the founder's version. The Naming module covers the full method, including how a name sounds in other languages and a longer look at domains and handles.

  1. Question 1, locked

What do you see first when you open IP India's public trademark search in October 2026?

    • A search form with a Wordmark box
    • A Login with OTP box asking for an email address or mobile number
    • A payment page for the search fee
    • The list of well-known marks
  2. Question 2, locked

Why does the lesson have you run a Phonetic search as well as a Wordmark search?

    • Phonetic search is faster than Wordmark search
    • Phonetic search covers all 45 classes at once
    • A respelling does not escape a mark that sounds the same
    • Wordmark search leaves out older marks
  3. Question 3, locked

A business has traded under a name for years without filing a trademark. What does the lesson say about it?

    • It shows up in the public search as a pending mark
    • It has no rights at all in India
    • It appears on the Well Known Marks list
    • It will not appear in the search, and it can still sue for passing off
