Labels versus printed containers

Lesson 17 of 20 in Packaging.

How Labeling Equipment Works, From Pressure-Sensitive to Shrink Sleeve · Packaging World
Lesson

There are three common ways to get graphics onto a container and the choice is mostly economic. A paper or film label applied afterwards, direct printing onto the container, and a shrink sleeve that wraps the whole form.

Bottle, carton, pouch and tin, each carrying a different amount of readable front.
Three glass bottles stand in a row: one with a paper label and rolls of coloured labels beside it, one with a dotted pattern printed on the glass before a tall stack of bottles, and one in a check-patterned sleeve squashed at the shoulder.
Three bottles carry graphics three ways: a paper label for short runs, a pattern printed on the glass for long runs, and a sleeve whose checks squash at the neck.

  1. Question 1, locked

Type set neatly across the shoulder of a bottle comes back squashed on the shrink sleeve. What was missed?

    • The bleed allowance around the sleeve seam
    • The sleeve was ordered in the wrong polymer for the container
    • The artwork was drawn to the bottle's height rather than its circumference
    • The supplier's distortion template, since the film is printed flat and then shrunk onto the shape
  2. Question 2, locked

Which of these words means this? “Printed separately and stuck on. Cheap to change, visible edge.”

    • Variant device
    • Blocking
    • Applied label
    • Shrink sleeve
  3. Question 3, locked

Which of these words means this? “Printed onto the container itself. No edge, higher setup, harder to change.”
