Lesson

An audience watches a brand. A brand community is a group of people who talk to each other about the brand, with the brand as one member among them, usually the host. The difference shows in a simple test. If members would still talk, help and argue with one another when the brand is not in the room, there is a community. If every conversation runs through the brand's own account, there is an audience, however warmly the brand describes it. Communities are valuable because members explain the brand to newcomers, make things for it and turn up, but they also have a will of their own.

    • Whether it has more than 10,000 followers
    • Whether it runs paid ads every month
    • Whether it has a mascot people recognise
    • Whether members would still talk to each other with the brand out of the room
  2. Question 2, locked

On LEGO Ideas, what happens when a fan's idea reaches 10,000 supporters?

    • It is considered for production, and its creator would receive 1 per cent of net sales
    • It is produced automatically within a month
    • Its creator is hired by LEGO as a designer
    • It goes to a public vote against every other idea
  3. Question 3, locked

Why does the lesson tell a brand to keep an owned channel, such as an email list?

    • Email is cheaper than advertising on Instagram
    • A community that lives only on one platform can be cut off when the platform acts
    • An email list is required by law for Indian brands
    • Instagram does not let brands reply to comments
