Building a palette from scratch

Lesson 19 of 27 in Colour.

Make Hundreds of Color Palettes from 1 COLOR! - Design Tutorial · The Futur Academy
Lesson

Start with one colour and a reason, not with a scheme. The reason can be a material, a place, a competitor gap, or something physically true about the product, and it matters because it is what stops the palette being revisited endlessly on taste.

primary · almost everythingsecondary · accents andstatesextended · charts and edgecasesif every tier gets equal space on the page, none of them is primary
A primary pair, a secondary set and an extended range, in the proportions each is used.
A clay pot on the left with its orange colour lifted into a large swatch, followed by a path of smaller swatches in white, black, blue and two tiny ones with a button and warning icon.
One colour lifted from a real clay pot becomes the anchor, then come neutrals, one accent and small helpers with set jobs. A real reason stops endless taste debates.
