Storyboarding

Lesson 9 of 10 in Motion and time.

GOAT | The Art of Storyboarding with Story Artist Chase Conley | Sony Animation · Sony Pictures Animation
Lesson

Storyboarding en.wikipedia.org as a formal process came out of the Disney studio in the early 1930s: pin the drawings to a board in sequence, and you can see the whole film before anybody animates a frame. The panels are shot descriptions more than illustrations: the framing, what is in it, what moves, and what the cut is to.

A wall of pinned sketch panels in rows, with one animator moving a panel while a director stands back with folded arms to look at the whole sequence.
A team pins a rough sketch of every shot to a wall in order and moves one to a new place. The whole film can be seen before a single frame is animated.
