Editorial online and the scroll

Lesson 9 of 10 in Editorial design.

Lesson

The web took away the two things editorial design was built on: the fixed page and the spread. What is left is one continuous column of unknown width, which is why so much online long-form reads as an undifferentiated wall.

An ink drawing of a commuter on a train reading a phone that shows a narrow column of grey lines, a wide coastline photograph and a thin progress bar at the top.
A long read on a phone, paced with one wide picture.
