Lesson

Everyone remembers the poster and the postcards. This is the sheet that had to do the explaining.

A printed sheet, photographed framed behind glass. DIE AUSSTELLUNG 1923 runs across the top. Below it a five-row table sets red category headings (the school, the workshops, the building, painting and sculpture, the stage) beside paragraphs of justified German text on yellow, with a second red column of listings down the right-hand side.

  1. Question 1, locked

Schlemmer had to explain the whole Bauhaus to a public told it was a nest of cranks. What did each row of his table pair up?

    • A teacher's name with the workshop they ran
    • A claim with the evidence you could go and see
    • A painting with the sculpture it inspired
    • A belief with a quotation from a famous artist
  2. Question 2, locked

On Schlemmer's sheet, red and black are used throughout. What does red tell the reader?

    • It marks a label, and black marks prose
    • It marks the single most important claim
    • It is decoration to liven up the poster
    • It marks a quotation from a teacher
  3. Question 3, locked

A century on, which part of Schlemmer's 1923 sheet does the lesson say designers still copy?

    • The justified German text block
    • The column of red capitals on the right
    • The headline set for three metres away
    • The way a comparison table is built
