Lesson

Every shape in Illustrator is a path, and every path is made of the same few parts. An anchor point marks a place where the path is pinned down. A segment runs from one anchor point to the next, straight or curved. A curved segment is steered by direction handles, the thin lines with a dot at the end that stick out of a point, and the length and angle of each handle decide how the curve leaves one point and arrives at the next. That is the whole kit. Adobe's help sorts anchor points into two kinds, where a smooth point lets a curve flow through it and a corner point makes a sharp angle.

  1. Question 1, locked

You have just dragged out a smooth point. To make the next segment a C-shaped curve, which way do you drag at the next point?

    • In the same direction as the previous handle
    • In the opposite direction to the previous handle
    • Straight down, holding Shift
    • You click without dragging
  2. Question 2, locked

How does the Pen tool make a sharp tip where two curves meet, as at the top of a drop?

    • By holding Shift as you click
    • By pressing Esc between the two curves
    • By holding Alt or Option and dragging the end of a handle so only that side moves
    • By running Object > Path > Simplify afterwards
  3. Question 3, locked

A generated curve that you would draw with four points arrives with forty. What does the lesson tell you to do?

    • Redraw it over the top with the pen on a new layer, keeping the generated version as a guide
    • Keep it, since more points always make a smoother curve
    • Convert all forty points to corner points
    • Export it as a PNG so the points no longer matter
