Vector illustration from a sketch

Lesson 3 of 10 in Illustration for brands.

Adobe Illustrator for Beginners - Sketch to Vector Tutorial · Brad Colbow
Lesson

Most brand drawings end up as vector artwork, because the same drawing has to print large on a hoarding and also sit small beside a line of text on a phone. Lenskart's rules say illustrations are best made in vector, so that they scale smoothly across print and digital. That part is not in dispute. The Illustrator module teaches the Pen tool and Pathfinder in full. This lesson is the order of work for one drawing, starting with a pencil sketch and ending with a clean file that someone else can open and change.

  1. Question 1, locked

You shrink a figure to fit into a scene with other drawings. How should Scale Strokes & Effects be set?

    • On, so the figure stays in proportion
    • It makes no difference to line weight
    • Off, so its lines stay at the house weight
    • On, then thicken every line by hand afterwards
  2. Question 2, locked

You set Dim Images to on a template layer, but your sketch does not fade. What is the likely reason?

    • The sketch was drawn in Illustrator, and dimming only applies to linked and bitmap images
    • Template layers can never be dimmed below 80 per cent
    • The layer must not be locked for dimming to work
    • Dimming only shows in Outline view
  3. Question 3, locked

How do you give every similar line in a set exactly the same taper?

    • Draw each line with the Pencil at the same speed
    • Copy one line and rotate it for each use
    • Switch to the Blob Brush at a larger size
    • Save the taper as a width profile and apply it from the Stroke panel
