The Polish poster school

Lesson 4 of 10 in Poster design.

Lesson

In post-war Poland, film and theatre posters were commissioned from artists rather than from studios, distribution ran through a state system, and there was no commercial requirement to show a star's face. What came out was a body of work built on painted metaphor.

An ink drawing of a round advertising column on a winter street with a hand-painted poster of a face whose hair turns into a flock of birds, and a woman stopping to look.
A painted metaphor on a street column in place of a star's face.
