Rhythm and repetition

Lesson 21 of 27 in Composition and layout.

Understanding Repetition & Rhythm as a Principle of Design · NPTEL-NOC IITM
Lesson

Rhythm in layout is the pattern of what recurs and at what spacing, and it operates both within a page and across a sequence of them. A magazine has a rhythm of dense and open spreads, and a website has one of sections and their intervals.

repetition sets the ruleone break carries theemphasisrhythm
A regular run of marks with one interruption.
A designer studies a long row of pinned magazine spreads on a studio wall, alternating dense text pages and open picture pages, while a colleague moves one.
A designer pins every page of a magazine in one row on the wall to see the run of busy and quiet pages. Rhythm shows up across the whole sequence, not on one page.
