Tints, tones and shades

Lesson 16 of 27 in Colour.

Hugo Baeta: Tint, Tone & Shade · WordPress
Lesson

Three ways of extending one colour into a family, and they behave differently enough that choosing the wrong one is a common reason a palette feels cheap. Adding white, adding black and adding grey do not produce comparable results.

tint · plus whiteshade · plus black kills the saturation fastest
A colour with white, with grey and with black added.
A paint slab with a bright orange blob in the middle, a muddy brown mix made with black on the left and a rich deep orange-red mix on the right.
Mixing black into bright orange paint gives brown, while a darker neighbouring colour keeps it glowing. Black dulls a colour fast, so darken with a hue instead.

Try it

Pick any colour and see where it goes towards white and towards black. Bright yellows run out of room at the light end.

The "Aa" on each step is set in whichever of black or white reads better on it. A step marked large only cannot carry body text in either.
