Typesetting long text

Lesson 6 of 10 in Editorial design.

Lesson

Setting ten thousand words so somebody reads all of them is a craft with measurable parts. Measure, leading and size are not independent: a long measure needs more leading, or the eye loses its place returning to the start of the next line.

An ink drawing of a printed proof with a white river running down a justified column of grey lines, circled by a hand with a red pencil, beside a neater narrower proof.
A river of white gaps circled on a proof of long text.
