Pacing a publication

Lesson 3 of 10 in Editorial design.

Lesson

Pacing is the arrangement of loud and quiet across a sequence. A publication where every spread is a full-bleed photograph is exhausting by page ten, and one where every spread is three columns of grey text is abandoned by page four. The interest is in the alternation.
