InDesign, the basics

A four-page booklet, start to finish

Lesson 7 of 7 in InDesign, the basics.

Checked against the makers' documentation on 9 October 2026.

Lesson

This is one working session on No. 4, the face oil pressed in small batches in Kochi and sold in amber glass. The job was a four-page A5 leaflet to go in the box and sit on a shop counter, with a cover, a page on how to use four drops, a page on what is in the oil and a page on where to buy it. A sheet of A4 folded once makes it. Every setting came from the lessons before this one, and the printer's instructions came before any of them. The printer and its numbers belong to this example, so ask your own printer for theirs.

  1. Question 1, locked

Why was No. 4's leaflet given a wider inside margin than its other margins?

    • To keep words clear of the fold
    • To leave room for the crop marks
    • Because the printer asked for 15 mm of bleed
    • To make the baseline grid fit exactly
  2. Question 2, locked

Preflight flagged a small photograph in the leaflet at 212 ppi. How was it fixed?

    • It was generated again at a higher size with Text to Image
    • It was converted to CMYK in Photoshop
    • It was cropped less tightly, which brought it back above 300 ppi
    • The profile's minimum was lowered to 200 ppi
  3. Question 3, locked

What did running Generative Expand in Photoshop, not InDesign, keep for the leaflet's cover photograph?

    • A lower credit cost than InDesign charges
    • A CMYK version made automatically for the printer
    • A second, generated bottle to choose from
    • Its link and its RGB profile, which PDF/X-4 accepts
