Sound and image together

Lesson 8 of 10 in Motion and time.

Diegetic vs Non-Diegetic Sound Explained - Applied Cinema Studies · Videomaker
Lesson

Sound does more than half the work in film and gets a small fraction of the attention in brand production. The same footage cut to two different tracks reads as two different pieces, and the edit points that feel right are almost always the ones landing on the music.

A woman on a crowded train watches a silent video of coffee being poured on her phone, with a muted speaker icon in the corner and other passengers on their phones.
A commuter watches a video on a crowded train with the sound off. Most social video is seen muted, so the pictures have to tell the story by themselves.
