The magazine grid

Lesson 2 of 10 in Editorial design.

Lesson

A magazine grid is doing two jobs at once. It gives a designer a set of places to put things, which speeds up production, and it makes forty pages by four people look like one publication, which is the whole reason it exists.

12 columns · 8px gutterspans 5spans 6
A twelve-column grid with gutters, and a block spanning five columns.
Four different magazine page layouts drawn by four hands, all sharing the same three faint column guides, joined by a bracket underneath.
Four hands lay out four different pages on the same column grid, and they still look like one magazine. The grid is what holds forty pages together.
