Transitions and continuity

Lesson 4 of 10 in Motion and time.

WWDC24: Enhance your UI animations and transitions | Apple · Apple Developer
Lesson

A transition's job is to explain a change, which means answering where something came from and where it went. Done well it removes the small moment of reorientation that a hard change causes.

continuous · the eye keeps hold of itcut · the eyestarts againcarry the thing across, or cut cleanly. anything inbetween feels wrong
An element that moves between two screens against one that is replaced.
Two rows of phones: above, a full-screen photo appears abruptly and a small person looks confused; below, a photo square grows along a dotted path and the person follows it.
A photo that just appears leaves the viewer lost, while one that grows out of its small square shows where it came from. Good motion explains a change.
