Lesson

Most icons start as plain shapes. A drop can begin as a circle with its top point pulled up, a bottle as two rounded rectangles stacked, a sun as a circle and eight short lines. Illustrator's shape tools, among them the Rectangle tool (M) and the Ellipse tool (L), make live shapes, which Adobe describes as shapes you can keep adjusting with on-shape widgets or the Transform panel without switching tools. Drag a corner widget on a live shape and every corner rounds together. With the Direct Selection tool you can round just one. When the brand has a rule for corners, type the exact radius into the Corner Radii fields of the Transform panel (Window > Transform) instead of dragging.
