No. 4's spot illustrations, then yours

Lesson 10 of 10 in Illustration for brands.

Checked against the makers' documentation on 9 October 2026.

Lesson

This is a walkthrough for No. 4, the face oil pressed in small batches in Kochi and sold in amber glass. The job is a spot set of five small drawings for its A5 leaflet and its 4:5 posts, with a rules page so that the sixth drawing, made by somebody else next year, still matches. What follows is a set of decisions, each with its reason and the settings to use. Treat it as a plan to follow and change. It is not a record of finished artwork.

  1. Question 1, locked

Why does No. 4's spot set show no faces at all?

    • Faces are too hard to draw on a 600 pixel artboard
    • The brand's voice rules out glowing skin and before-and-after faces
    • The printer cannot reproduce skin tones on cream paper
    • AI tools cannot keep faces consistent across a set
  2. Question 2, locked

On No. 4's 600 pixel artboards, what line weights does the plan set?

    • 1.2 points for every line
    • 2 pixel outlines and 1 pixel details
    • 10 pixel outlines and no detail lines
    • 6 pixel outlines and 3 pixel details, in Walnut
  3. Question 3, locked

Why does the brief rule out brush texture for No. 4's spots?

    • The spots must print cleanly at 20 millimetres wide and survive being traced to vector
    • Texture cannot be drawn in Illustrator at all
    • Amber looks muddy whenever texture is added
    • Procreate cannot export a textured drawing
