Warm and cool

Lesson 15 of 27 in Colour.

Learning Color Temperature Will Change How You Paint · Proko
Lesson

Warm and cool is the most useful colour distinction after light and dark, and the most loosely used. The convention is that reds and yellows are warm and blues are cool, and that warm colours appear to come forward while cool ones recede.

cool recedeswarm comes forward
Warm colours advancing, cool colours receding.
A painter at an easel paints a valley with orange and yellow hills in front and blue and purple hills in the distance.
A painter makes the near hills warm and the far hills cool and blue. Warm colours seem to come forward and cool ones sink back, which gives a picture depth.
