Research and word lists

Lesson 3 of 12 in Logo design, start to finish.

Checked against the makers' documentation on 9 October 2026.

Lesson

Research for one mark is narrower than research for a whole brand, which the Practice course's lesson on discovery covers. Here there are three questions. What do the marks in this trade already look like, which of them are registered, and what words does the brief give you to draw from? Skipping them is how a designer loses a week to an idea that a rival's delivery van already carries.

  1. Question 1, locked

Why does the lesson print every mark on the competitor wall at one size, in black on white?

    • Printers charge less for black
    • So no mark gets help from its colour or its advertising budget
    • Because trademark registers only store black marks
    • So the wall can be photocopied for the client
  2. Question 2, locked

What does WIPO say happens to the image you upload to the Global Brand Database's Find by brand logo search?

    • It is added to the public register as a pending mark
    • It is passed to the national office of your country
    • It is stored for thirty days and then deleted
    • WIPO keeps no record of it once the analysis is done
  3. Question 3, locked

What did Lopez Design find when it reviewed the restroom symbols already in use around the world?

    • That none had been tested with users
    • That they were too detailed to read at a distance
    • That most gender neutral symbols excluded a set of people
    • That they could not be printed in one colour
