Taste as a filter, said precisely

Lesson 6 of 10 in AI art direction.

Developing taste is easy, actually · orenmeetsworld
Lesson

Taste gets talked about as though it were mystical, and treating it that way makes it impossible to hire for and impossible to teach. It is better understood as a filter that has been trained by looking at a great deal of work and by being made to say why, out loud, repeatedly.

A person pours a pile of small prints into a big kitchen sieve held over a table. Most stay caught in the mesh; four fall through onto the table. Shelves of old books and archive boxes surround them.
The sieve is taste. It was built from years of looking, and it only lets four through.
