Disclosure, SynthID and content credentials

Lesson 9 of 10 in Best practices for AI video.

Lesson

Every Veo clip carries two marks, and we checked the second on a real one. SynthID is an invisible watermark that Google DeepMind says is added the moment the content is made and designed to 'stand up to modifications like cropping, adding filters, changing frame rates, or lossy compression'. Content Credentials are signed metadata. Reading our 4-second Veo 3.1 Lite clip with c2patool 0.28.0 showed a manifest signed by Google LLC as 'Google Media Processing Services', a created action described as 'Created by Google Generative AI' and an edited action that reads 'Added imperceptible SynthID watermark'. Google is not alone, since Adobe applies credentials to assets Firefly generated entirely, OpenAI says images from ChatGPT and its API carry both C2PA and SynthID, and Runway says it has adopted the C2PA's provenance standards.

Two marks on a Veo clip: SynthID lives in the pixels and is designed to survive a rewrap, a re-encode and a trim; Content Credentials live in the file and a plain rewrap removed them in our test; separately, the law and platform rules say who must label.
An ink drawing of a green glass bottle on a windowsill with a faint pattern etched into the glass, and a paper tag on string at its neck, half torn away.
The watermark lives in the glass. The paper label can be torn off.
