Negatives, and when they help

Lesson 5 of 13 in Prompting for creatives.

Lesson

Writing no watermark inside a normal prompt often produces a watermark, because the model reads the words and not the logic. Some systems provide a separate negative field, which works differently: it genuinely steers the denoising away from that region. Where one exists, use it. Where one does not, do not rely on the word no.

A person holds up a card with a sketch of a cat crossed out. Next to them, a painter looks at the card and carefully paints a big, handsome cat on the canvas, ignoring the cross completely.
The painter copies the cat and ignores the cross, which is what a model does with the word no.
