Likeness, voice and consent

Lesson 5 of 11 in Rights, ethics and the argument.

Deepfakes, Right of Publicity, No Fakes Act, and Take It Down Act · Christa Laser
Lesson

A person's face and voice are protected in many jurisdictions, and a generated version can engage those protections whether or not you meant it to. Several places have passed or proposed specific laws about synthetic likeness in the last few years.

In a quiet studio, a photographer and a model sit at a small table while the model reads a new agreement carefully before signing. Nearby, a microphone on a stand waits with its cable unplugged and coiled on the floor.
Ask again, in writing, for this use. The microphone stays unplugged until she agrees.
