Avoid unexpected bills on Google Cloud (Tutorial) · Victor Dantas
Lesson

Every provider offers two different things under similar names, and mixing them up is how people get surprised. A hard cap refuses requests once it is reached. An alert sends an email and lets the requests carry on. Know which one you have. Google Cloud's budget page says it plainly, that an alerts-only budget does not cap usage or spending, and every hard cap described below also runs late, because billing systems notice spend minutes after it happens.

A spend meter with alerts at 50 and 90 percent that only send email, and a hard cap at 100 percent that refuses requests after about ten minutes of billing lag.
An ink drawing of an old green coin-fed meter on a wall, its round blue dial with the needle low, and a small tray of orange coins beneath it.
A prepaid meter runs on what you put in, and stops when it is empty.
