A parameter is an instruction typed after the description. Midjourney's help gives three rules for them. They go at the very end of the prompt, there is a space before the two hyphens, and there is no punctuation inside them. So "poppies--ar 2:3" fails, and so does a comma after the last value. Most of them also sit in the settings panel as defaults. Typed into a prompt, a parameter changes that one prompt only, which is why it is worth typing them.
