Structured output and why a schema beats a paragraph

Lesson 12 of 13 in Prompting for creatives.

OpenAI DevDay 2024 | Structured outputs for reliable applications · OpenAI
Lesson

Ask a model for a shoot plan in prose and you get prose, which a person can read and nothing else can. Ask for the same plan as a list of shots, each with an angle, a light, a surface and a crop, and you get something a pipeline can run, a spreadsheet can count and a checker can verify.

A tangled ribbon of paper trails in from the left. On the right, a wooden tray has four slots shaped like a lens, a lamp, a flat stone and a frame. A hand places matching objects into the slots, while one odd object sits outside, not fitting.
Each answer must fit its slot. What doesn't fit gets caught before anything downstream trusts it.
